not much of a post, but enough to show signs of life - KY

is anyone else excited that uni's starting? and with the start of uni, i'll have to give up on some things, so thought i'd reminisce on them while i can. well, since i gave up GG around the 11th episode (did i hear anyone scream sacrilege?) i've been making myself useful, whether it be parking myself infront of 56inch screens, or 5600 inch screens. so was reading the other entries and saw broze's one on biggie. which reminded me of this.

Notorious. release date 2009. yer, that means this year. it was still on poster when i caught slumdog, so i'm guessing it's not yet released. would anyone watch this? i was always more of a 2pac man than notorious. but we all know the reason why they've only released docos and not movies of 2pac (because he's still alive). and well that reminded me of a man called oliver stone.


and the one called W. the first movie ever made of a president while he was still in office. i give my respect to george, cos he had the cajones to stand by any decisions or policies he made. but i always imagined that he'd be tried for war crimes in 50 years time. but this is one i'm actually kind of interested in seeing.

aside from those, other movies i want to catch rain, hail or mid-semester exam. watchmen, transformers 2, the other w. wolverine, the GI that is Joe, Sherlock Holmes, restraining my gag reflexes - Dorian Gray, Star Trek, Public Enemies (damon and depp), and.. i'm not ashamed to say it - Harry Potter. without a rom-com in sight, i think it's safe to say that 2009 is a blokish year in the theatres to say the least.

random anecdote: when my sister went to watch Benjamin Button, she left the theatre - behind two of the burliest, most ripped men in life, bawling their eyes out confessing to each other that it was the most beautiful thing they'd ever seen.

random question: having picked up how i met your mother, which i have a theory that says it is 21st century 'Friends' minus phoebe.. but who is ted's wife? and where does robin fit in?

random just random: hope can meet up with y'all muchos over this year, so we can study hard and play hard. or for some, just play hard. seeing y'all soon.

'Fall' season review - SC

The new TV season isn't actually all that new. In fact it's been going for a couple of months now. But those couple of months have been consumed by the lower points of life (ie. exams) and the belated TV reviews are finally here. The purpose will be to give an insight to some lesser known but nevertheless worthy shows, new and old, airing in the American 'Fall' season.

An amazing new show about a world just like the one we live in, only vampires really exist. But this isn't some Buffy or Blade copycat. The story is set in a small American town (which is a nice change from the California/NY focus of American fiction) two years after vampires have decided to 'come out of the coffin' and reveal their existence to the world. Vampiric fiction has always been sexually charged, and there are certainly some strong sexual themes in the show, channelled primarily through Aussie actor Ryan Kwanten whom you may recognize from Home and Away. But the real draw for this show I think, apart from the unique concept, is the old-fashioned style romance that is sure to have women of all ages gasping for air. Only downside: the otherwise pretty protagonist has gapped teeth.

Not the most original of ideas but Simon Baker, apart from having an awesome first name, really makes this show worth watching. He plays a kind of genius, working as a consultant for the California (again) Bureau of Investigations. So smart in fact, people think he's psychic. It's also a rare new show that have more or less stand-alone episodes. Good if you watch TV irregularly but not if you like mysteries and plots that are pursued throughout the course of an entire season. Like if you're a TV junkie like me. I don't mind though, because Simon Baker is not the only thing I have in common with the show. One of the agents' last name is also quite common within our shared heritage.

Who hit Angelina Jolie before Brad Pitt? Johnny Lee Miller. Who plays Eli Stone. A modern day prophet. And lawyer. Plenty of lawyer dramas around. But this is the only show that keeps me waiting week in week out for the next episode. It's in its second season now which means throughout this lengthy Summer break you should all go and find season 1 online. It'll bring out your inner idealist.

On September 5th 2008, it was announced that Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz was giving Willa Holland (aka. the OC's Kaitlyn Cooper, Marissa's sister) a at-least-3-episode stint in season 2 of Gossip Girl. Willa will play Agnes, a 16-year old model working for Eleanor Waldorf (aka. Blair's mum). She is to create havoc with Taylor Momsen's character Jenny Humphrey.

Do not be fooled! Contrary to the title of the album, this isn't Ricky Martin's new 'Greatest Hits' album. Rather it’s the heavily anticipated 4^th installment from Coldplay. Two years in gestation, 'Viva la Vida' shows a resurrection of the their old style, yet it mixes in with an experimental birth of something fresh and revitalizing. It could be simply described as orchestral, upbeat and electrifying.

Personal Favourites include:

Viva la Vida, Lovers in Japan, Lost and Strawberry Swing.

Let's talk about some real TV shows - SC

The semifinalists for the the Emmys are out and there are 10 shows for each Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series categories.

I like to think of myself as a popular culture/contemporary television connoisseur (ie. couch potato), made possible by the lovely people at sidereel, Chinese youtubes and well, the whole bloody Internet. The restraints of time and Internet caps mean I cannot possibly have seen all 20 shows but I do know, there is a lot of quality out there. And Gossip Girl does not come close.

Here are just three of the best you can even find on free-to-air Australian television.

Channel 7's

To start with the obvious. Boston Legal is an amazing platform for raising an amazing array of issues, not always legal in nature but always socially important. David Spade has got to be one of the most underrated actors of his generation and sometimes I forget he's acting when he goes into one of his long monologues in the courtroom. All that and at its core, it's a comedy series.
To be fair it loses much of its consistency in the fourth season with an overhaul of characters but in recognition the fifth season has been announced to be the last. William Shatner's last stand if you will, after almost half a century of television fame.

Channel 9'sIf ever there was a milf...though she reminds me of an Ellen Pompey, in that she suits her role perfectly, but it doesn't require so much acting prowess.
Weeds isn't just great for its brilliant scriptwriting and plotlines, but its entire premise is completely different. A middle-upper class single mother plying her trades as the local pot dealer (though this makes serious developments as the show progresses). Probably what makes this show worth watching is the co-stars. Her kids, friends and co-workers are the ones with personalities and the source of the humour.

Channel 10's
Wikipedia classifies it as a 'dark comedy', 'police procedural' and 'psychological thriller'. I classify it as freakin' awesome. You only have to watch the opening sequence to realize that this is a show with class.
Channel 10's ads have been purposefully vague. Based on a book, Dexter Morgan is a forensic blood spatter analyst, and a serial killer. Sounds corny yes, but it has been consistently highly reviewed by critics, and me.
Given the nature of its content, the version to be shown on Channel 10 will be slightly edited. Which is a shame.

So. Watch some good tv shows shall we?

GG - DK

No, I am not talking about the gaming term "good game," I'm talking about the TV show "Gossip Girl."

Before all of you guys start jumping to conclusions, thinking gossip + girl = a show JUST for girls, its not, even though the title may suggest so.
If you like the OC (and the OC's target audience was not purely females) then you'd like this as well.

Also, let me tell you that two of the manliest men on this blog, JL and DK watch this, so thats saying something...

So I won't give too much away. Basically its set in the Upper East Side,
New York, where all the rich kids live and they do whatever the want with the money they have.
Anyway, its much more than about money...you got the whole mix of friendships, relationships, cheating, partying, conflict, fighting, breakups, etc.
You get the typical average kid who falls for the rich girl and try to make things work.
You get the uptight rich girl who loves to cause trouble.
You get the hot boyfriend who's just...hot.

I just probably made this show sound crap, but its not as crap as it sounds! Although it sounds like a typical television series, its just something about the show that just makes you keep watching it.
So if you got the time, then give it a go.

A place of drama, death, destruction (the earthquake)..and even...lesbianism! (AT edit: dykeness starts with a D =P )
OK, so it didn't start with "d" but nonetheless it did add some spice to the series (for the rainy team at least)

So we've come up with the top 6 OC chicks..(unfortunately for Law, his would be no.1 pick Julie Cooper just missed out, coming in at no. 7)...
How does the rainy team rank each of these girls? Do they prefer the neurotic, stalkerish, perfectionist Taylor Townsend, the naughty and devious Caitlin, or even the bisexual Alex?

So it all comes down to this...
David Cook (left) or David Archuleta (right).
Although the other Top 3 finalist, Syesha Mercado, is a great singer, she is a third wheel in this competition and doesn't stand a chance against these two budding superstars.

So will America choose the cute, adorable, teenage sensation or the much older and hunkier rocker? (I speak for America when using these descriptions, not for myself).

The young girls love David Archuleta, squealing and swooning with delight after every performance. Who cares about his voice, they just can't get enough of him and his lovable smile. But then again, which high school girl wouldn't.

On the other hand, David Cook has also proved himself worthy of superstardom. Maybe not as good looking as Archuleta, he still holds a fan base with the middle aged women and old grannies.

As of now, it's up to the hands of America.

So, who do I think is going to win it? I have no idea, but one thing I know for sure...the winner will have the coolest name in the world.
